From Movie to TV series
Big Screen movies (some of which were inspired from books or plays) that inspired small screen series. Some worked and some didn't. Let me know if you can think of more!!
Ace Ventura; Pet Detective: This 1994 film inspired a cartoon series in 1996. Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore: This 1974 movie gave us the TV series "Alice" starring Linda Lavin. Back To The Future: The 1985 movie inspired a cartoon series that ran from 1991-93. It was called "Back To The Future; The Animated Series". Bad News Bears: This 1976 film inspired a tv series of the same name that ran from 1979-80. Beetlejuice: This 1988 film inspired a cartoon series of the same name during 1989-92. There are 95 great episodes of this cool toon! Blue Thunder: The 1983 film starring Roy Scheider gave birth to a 1984 TV series starring James Farentino. Eleven episodes were aired before it was cancelled. Bob And Carol, Ted And Alice: this 1969 film starring Eliott Gould, Dyan Cannon, Robert Culp and Natalie Wood inspired a 1973 TV series starring the late Robert Urich and Anne Archer. Breaking Away: This 1979 film starred Dennis Christopher, Dennis Quaid and Daniel Stern and in the series of the same name Shaun Cassidy, Barbara Barrie and Vincent Gardenia. Buck Rogers In The 25th Century: This 1979 film starring Gil Gerard gave way to the 1979-81 series. The Cowboys: This 1972 John wayne film inspired a TV series of the same name. Fame: The 1980 film inspired the 1982 series. Ferris Buellers Day Off: this 1986 film inspired a 1990 TV series called "Ferris Bueller" that ran for 13 episodes. Gentle Giant: This film gave us the TV series "Gentle Ben", the further adventures of a young boy and his friend Ben, the bear. This series ran from 1967-69. Ghost and Mrs. Muir: The 1947 film starred Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison. The 1969-70 series starred Hope Lange and Edward Mulhare. Herbie The Love Bug: This 1982 series was inspired by the four Disney films and lasted only four episodes. Dean Jones and Richard Paul starred in it! Highlander: This 1986 film inspired several more movies as well as several TV series, including one animated series in 1994. In The Heat Of The Night: The 1967 film starred Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger. The tv series starred Carroll O"Connor in the Steiger role and the late Howard Rollins in the Poitier role. Karate Kid: This movie inspired a cartoon series that ran from 1989-90. The Life and Times Of Grizzly Adams: This 1975 film starred Dan Haggerty as the title character. Dan also starred in the 1977-78 TV series. Logan's Run: The 1976 film starring Michael York, Richard Jordon, and Farrah Fawcett inspired the series starring Gregory Harrison as "Logan 5". There were 14 episodes. M.A.S.H.: Who can forget the movie that gave us the TV series that ran from 1972 till 83 and then inspired a new but less successful "After M.A.S.H". No Time For Sergeants: The 1958 film starred Andy Griffith as a country bumpkin who gets drafted and proceeds to wreck havoc in the Army. During the 1964-65 series Sammy Jackson and Harry Hickox were the stars and the setting was now the Air Force. Odd Couple (the); There were two series based on the successful 1968 film. The first series from 1970-75 starred Jack Klugman and Tony Randall and the other series from 1982 starred Ron Glass and Desmond Wilson. Paper Moon: 1973 film starring Ryan O'Neal and his daughter Tatumn inspired a 1974 series that starred Christopher Connelly and a young Jodie Foster. Planet of The Apes: The classic 1968 films inspired a TV series in 1974 starring Roddy McDowell who reprised his role from the film. There was also a 13 episode cartoon version which aired on NBC during 1975-76. Please Don't Eat The Daisies: The 1960 Doris Day film inspired the series of the same name and started Patricia Crowley and Mark Miller that ran from 1965-67. Robocop: The 1987 film inspired a TV series and a cartoon series in 1994. Seven Brides For Seven Brothers: This 1954 film inspired two series; one in 1968-70 starring teen idol Bobby Shermen, David Soul called "Here Comes The Brides" and another series in 1982 starring "Days of Our Lives" veteran actor Drake Hogestyn called what else but "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers". Teen Wolf: The 1986 movie inspired a cartoon series which ran from 1986-89 on CBS. Walking Tall: Based on the movie of the same name, this 1981 series starring Bo Svenson lasted only 7 episodes. Svenson took over the role of Buford Pusser from actor Joe Don Baker who starred as Pusser in the original movie from 1973.
