In loving memory

Most, but certainly not all of those listed on this page I remember from some project they worked on in the 1970's even though many  began their careers years, if not decades earlier.  This is not a complete list, if you can think of more, please let me know.


Claude Akins: He had a long and varied career and several TV series gained him a loyal fan base following. "Movin On" in 1974 and then as "Sheriff Lobo" in the "BJ and the Bear" series which inspired the show in 1979 called "The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo" (also known as "Lobo").  Claude died January 24, 1997 of cancer.
Jack Albertson:  He was the grandpa in "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory", but we also remember him from 1974 TV series "Chico and the Man".  Jack died November 25, 1981 from cancer.
Jim Backus:  You may remember him as the voice of cartoon character "Mr. Magoo" or as millionaire castaway "Thurston Howell, III" on "Gilligan's Island".  Jim died of pneumonia due to Parkinson's disease on July 3, 1989
Jack Baker:  He played C.C. MacNamara in the Saturday morning show "Wonderbug".  Jack died of cancer on November 13, 1994.
Billy BartyWhile this little guy's screen credits date back to the days of silent films, I remember him best in the  Saturday morning show "Dr. Shrinker" from 1976. Billy died December 23, 2000 of heart failure.
Bill Bixby:  Bill had several successful TV series, the first being "My Favorite Martin" in 1963-66 and then on the "Courtship of Eddie's Father" from 1969-72, but it is his role as "Dr. David Banner" on the 1978-82 series "The Incredible Hulk" that I best remember him from.  Bill died November 21, 1993 from prostrate cancer.
Amanda Blake:  She was Miss Kitty in the long running series "Gunsmoke". She died on August 16, 1989 from AIDS contracted from her husband.
Dan BlockerWe remember him best as Hoss from the series "Bonanza". Dan died May 13, 1972.
Sonny Bono:  Half of the Sonny an Cher combo. Sonny died in a skiing accident January 15, 1998.
Sorrell Booke
:  He played  Boss Hogg in the 1979 series "The Dukes of Hazzard" and that is probably the role that he is best remembered for. He died of cancer on February 11, 1994.
Jack Cassidy: Actor and father of teen idols, David and Shaun Cassidy, he died in a house fire December 12, 1976
Ted Cassidy:  He stood 6'9" tall and played "Lurch" on the "Addams Family" as well as the Bigfoot that menaced "The Bionic Woman".  (Andre the Giant donned the Bigfoot get up in the episode of the Six Million Dollar Man called "The Secret of Bigfoot")  Ted also did voice work on various cartoons.    He died January 16, 1979 from complications following open heart surgery.
Bert Convy:  Bert had a long and varied career working in theatre, movies and TV.  He died of brain tumor on July 15, 1991.
Ellen Corby:  I remember her best as "Grandma Walton" on "The Waltons", but Ellen's career really started back in 1940.   She died April 14, 1999.
Bob Crane:  He was Col Hogan in the series "Hogan's Heroes".  Bob was murdered June 29, 1978. His death still remains unsolved.
Jim Croce: Singer famous for talking about "Bad, Bad LeRoy Brown" and telling us "You Don't Mess Around with Jim".  He died in a plane crash on September 20, 1973.
Scatman Crothers:  He played "Louie Wilson" the garbage man on the 1974 series "Chico and the Man".  He also was the voice of "Hong Kong Phooey" in the 1974 cartoon series.  He died November 22, 1986 of lung cancer.
John Denver:  "Country Roads", "Rocky Mountain High" were two of his biggest 70's hits. John died in a plane crash on October 12, 1997.
Peter Duel: We loved him in "Alias Smith and Jones", sadly,  Peter committed suicide on December 31, 1971.
Marty Feldman: I remember him best from his role of Igor (that's pronounced Eye-gor) in the  1971 film "Young Frankenstein". Marty died December 2, 1982 from a heart attack brought on by food poisoning.
Norman Fell:  He was a veteran comedic actor whose career spanned thirty years.  We know him best as "Mr. Roper" from "Three's Company" and the spin off from that series called "The Ropers".  Norman died December 14, 1998.
Victor French: He was "Isiah Edwards" on "Little House on the Prairie" from 1974-77 when he left to star in his own series "Carter Country".When that show ended he came back to Little House to resume the role of Edwards till the end of that series.  He then joined Michael Landon in series called "Highway To Heaven".  Victor died June 15, 1989 of lung cancer
Will GeerWe loved him as Grandpa Zeb Walton. He died on April 22, 1978
Andy Gibb:  He came on the music scene with his successful "Shadow Dancing" album in 1978.  Andy, youngest brother of the Bee Gees--(Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb) died of a heart infection on March 10, 1988.
James Gregory: He played Inspector Frank Luger on Barney Miller.  James died of natural causes on September 16, 2002.
Fred Gwynne
:  As Herman Munster on the  1964 TV series "The Munsters" he delighted us. Fred died of pancreatic cancer on July 2, 1993.
Kevin Peter Hall:  He played on the 1985 series "Misfits of Science" and he was also the actor in the predator costume in the Predator movies.  Kevin died April 10, 1991 from AIDS that he contracted through a blood transfusion.
Shirley Hemphill: She played Shirley Wilson on "What's Happening".  She died of natural causes December 10. 1999.
Jon-Erik Hexum:I remember Jon best from the 1982 series "Voyagers!" but it was while he was working on the 1984 series "Cover Up" that he accidentally shot himself in the head with a prop gun.  He died October 18, 1984.  I can't believe it has been that long--we miss you Jon
Dana HillDana died July 15, 1996 of a stroke brought on by complications from diabetes.  She starred in the series the  "Two of Us" in 1981. 
David Janssen: His career started back in 1945, and he starred in a 1950's TV series called "Richard Diamond, Private Eye" but it was his role in the 60's cult favorite "The Fugitive" as Dr. Richard Kimble hunting for the one armed man that made him a household word.  He then starred in a 1974-76 series called "Harry-O". David died of a heart attack on February 13, 1980.
Carolyn JonesShe was an award winning actress, but most folks have a warm spot in their heart for her because of her portrayal of "Morticia Addams" on the series "The Addams Family.  Carolyn died August 3, 1983 from  cancer.
Brian Keith:  His career started back in the 1920's, but it was his work on the 1966 series "Family Affair" and the 1983 series called "Hardcastle and McCormick that folks seem to remember best.   Brian committed suicide June 24, 1997.
Nancy Kulp:  Nancy began her career in the 1950's but we remember her from her role as "Jane Hathaway" on the 1962 series "The Beverly Hillbillies."  Nancy died of cancer on February 3, 1991.
Audra Lindley: She was "Helen Roper" on "Three's Company" and "The Ropers".  Audra died of complications from leukemia October 16, 1997.
Larry Linville:  He played "Major Frank Burns" on M.A.S.H.  Larry died April 10, 2000.
Julie London: A successful actress and singer for many years, it was her role on Emergency as the sultry nurse Dixie that brought her to the limelight in the 70's.  Julie died October 18, 2000.
Jack Lord:  Probably best remembered as "Steve Garrett" from "Hawaii Five-O".  He died January 21, 1998 of heart failure.
Paul Lynde:  He played "Uncle Arthur" on "Bewitched" from 1965-72 and gained even more fans as the center square on the game show "The Hollywood Squares" from 1968-79.  He also provided the voice of "Sylvester Sneekly; the Hooded Claw" on the 1969 cartoon series "The Perils of Penelope Pitstop".   Paul died January 10, 1982.
Dean Paul Martin: I remember him from 1985 series "The Misfits of Science" and from the 60's rock group "Dino, Desi and Billy".  He was the son of the late Dean Martin.  Dean Paul was killed on March 21, 1987 when the FC4 Phantom II fighter jet he was piloting crashed into  Mount San Gorgonio in California.
Ruth McDevitt: She was Emily Cowles, the only person in the INS that Carl Kolchak trusted on the series Kolchak The Night Stalker.  Ruth died May 27th 1976.
Sam Melville: He played Officer Mike Denko on the 1970's series "The Rookies".  Sam died March 9, 1989.
Elizabeth Montgomery:She was the nose twitching witch on "Bewitched", but she began her career years earlier.  Elizabeth died of cancer on May 18, 1995.
Agnes Moorehead: One of Hollywood's best character actresses, Agnes gained a loyal following by playing "Endora", on "Bewitched".  She died April 30, 1974 of cancer.
Richard Mulligan: Although he had been acting for quite a number of years, it was his role as Burt Campbell on the series "SOAP" that made him a household name.  He also went on to star in another successful series called "Empty Nest" in 1988.  Richard died September 26, 2000 of cancer.
Hugh O'Connor: played Lonnie Jamison on the series "In The Heat of the Night". The son of actor Carroll O'Connor, Hugh committed suicide on March 28, 1995.
Lani O'Grady: She played the oldest daughter on the show "Eight Is Enough".  Lani died September 25, 200l.  She had retired from acting and was a talent agent at the time of her death.

Simon Oakland:  He was Tony Vinchenzo the much frazzled boss of Carl Kolchak on the classic 70's series "The Night Stalker"  Simon died August 29, 1983.

George Peppard:  His career started in the 1950's and one of his most famous movie roles is opposite Audrey Hepburn in "Breakfast at Tiffany's"  His first TV series was a 1972 hit called "Banacek" and then a 1975 hit "Doctor's Hospital" and then finally the very popular "A-Team" in 1983.  George died May 8, 1994 of pneumonia.
Dana Plato:  Best remembered as "Kimberly Drummond" in the 1978 series "Different Strokes".  Dana died May 8, 1999 of an apparent suicide although some say it was an accidental overdose of painkillers.
Freddy Prince:  He played Chico on "Chico and the Man" from 1974-77. Sadly, Freddie committed suicide in 1977. 
Denver Pyle:  Denver's career began in the 1940's but it was his role as "Mad Jack" in the 70's series "The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams" and then as "Uncle Jesse Duke" in the 1979 series "The Dukes of Hazzard" that I remember him best from.  Denver died of lung cancer December 25, 1997.
Dack Rambo:  Dack starred in a variety of TV series over the years, his first being the "New Loretta Young Show" in 1962 and his last being the soap "Another World" where he starred as "Grant Harrison" from 1990-91.  Dack died of AIDS on March 21, 1994.
Dirk Rambo: Twin brother to actor Dack Rambo. Dirk starred with his brother on the Loretta Young Shows in 1962.  Sadly, a fire in February 5, 1967 took the life of this up and coming star.
Robert Reed: His first TV series was 1961 "The Defenders", but it was as "Mike Brady" on the "Brady Bunch" that we seem to remember him best.  Robert died May 12, 1992 of AIDS related complications.
Vickie Sue Robinson: She did a few appearances in film, but I best remember her for her hit "Turn the Beat Around". Vickie died April 27, 2000 of cancer.
Esther Rolle: She starred in the series "Good Times" in 1974.  She died of complications for diabetes on  November 17, 1998.
Dick Sargent:  Although his career started in the 1950's, it was his role as the second  "Darrin Stevens" on "Bewitched" that endeared him to us.  Dick died July 8, 1994 of prostrate cancer.
McClean Stevenson: I remember him best from the  TV series M.A.S.H.  McClean died of a heart attack February 15, 1996.
Jack Soo: On "Barney Miller" he played "Det. Nick Yemana.  He died January 11, 1979 from cancer.
Vic Tayback:  He played Mel Sharpel in the movie "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" and then he continued with the character on the TV series "Alice" based on the movie.  Vic died of a heart attack May 25 1990.
Bobby Troop: He was a jazz musician/actor who married was married to Julie London, both starred on the 70's hit show Emergency.  Bobby died from a heart attack on February 7, 1999.
Robert Urich:  His first series was Bob, Ted, Carol and Alice, based on the movie, and we came to love him from his other shows as well, "Vegas", "Gavilan" and "Spenser for Hire.  Robert died of cancer on  April 16, 2002.
Bobby Van: Bobby is probably best known for being the host of several 70's and early 80's game shows.  He died of brain tumor on July 31, 1980
Tom Villard:  He played Jay Bostwick on "We Got It Made".  Tom died in 1994.
Herve Villechaize:  He played Tattoo on "Fantasy Island.  Sadly, Herve committed suicide on September 4, 1993.
Biff Warren:  He was "Doomsday" on the 1970's Saturday morning show "The Kids From C.A.P.E.R". Biff died in 1996.
Flip WilsonHis show ran from 1970-74.  Flip died  of liver cancer November 25, 1998.
Dick York:  He was best known as the first Darren on "Bewitched".  Dick died of emphysema on February 20, 1992.
